Heat pump efficiency explained: When is a heat pump most efficient and why

Key takeaways
- Heat pumps deliver far higher efficiency than boilers – typically 300–400%, because they move heat rather than burn fuel.
- Lower flow temperatures and a well-designed system are the biggest drivers of efficiency, helping your heat pump use less energy while keeping your home comfortably warm.
- Modern heat pumps stay efficient even in cold weather, and technologies like Aira Intelligence can push performance even further by optimising your system automatically.
Heat pumps are quickly becoming the UK’s most efficient way to heat a home. But how efficient are they really? What affects their performance? And when do they work best?
This guide brings everything together – how heat pump efficiency works, what impacts it, how they compare to boilers, and how the Aira Heat Pump (and Aira Home Energy System) deliver the highest efficiency with the lowest running costs.
Whether you’re researching, comparing, or getting ready to switch, here’s everything you need to know.
What heat pump efficiency really means
A boiler burns fuel to create heat. A heat pump moves existing heat from the air into your home.
This simple difference is what makes heat pumps so efficient. Instead of burning gas or oil at around 85–94% efficiency, a heat pump can reach efficiencies of 300–400% or more. Meaning you get three to four units of heat for every single unit of electricity used.
Because heat pumps don’t burn fuel, they immediately lower the carbon emissions produced in your home. And thanks to their much higher efficiency, they can cut your heating-related CO₂ emissions by around 75% – rising to 100% when powered by green electricity.
COP and SCOP explained
Efficiency is often described with two terms: COP and SCOP.
COP (Coefficient of Performance)
COP stands for Coefficient of Performance. It's a simple way of showing how efficiently your heat pump is working right now.
If your heat pump has a COP of 4, it means that for every 1 unit of electricity it uses, it delivers 4 units of heat into your home. That’s the power of moving heat rather than burning fuel.
COP naturally changes throughout the day. Outdoor temperature, the flow temperature of your heating system, and how hard your unit needs to work all play a role. In general, lower flow temperatures mean higher efficiency, which is why a well-designed system performs best.
Why does COP matter? Because it shows how effectively your heat pump turns electricity into heat, and highlights where your system can run even more efficiently.
SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance)
If COP is the snapshot, SCOP is the full story.
SCOP measures how your heat pump performs over an entire heating season, taking into account changing weather and real-life conditions. It gives you a true picture of year-round efficiency, and makes it easy to compare different heat pump types, including air source heat pumps like the Aira Heat Pump.
Live in a colder climate? Or use heating for more months of the year? SCOP shows how efficiently your system performs across all those shifts in temperature.
The rule is simple: the higher the SCOP, the more efficient your heat pump is across the year.

When is a heat pump most efficient?
Heat pumps are efficient all year round, but certain conditions allow them to perform at their very best.
1. Mild outdoor temperatures
Heat pumps extract heat from the outside air. The milder it is, the easier it is to pull that heat indoors, which is why efficiency naturally rises when the temperature difference is small.
But here’s the bit most people don’t expect: warmer doesn’t always mean more efficient.
In very warm summer weather, efficiency can actually dip slightly because your heating system doesn’t need much heat at all, so the pump cycles differently and may not run in its optimal range.
The sweet spot? Mild temperatures around the mid-teens to high-teens (roughly 13–18°C). That’s why heat pumps reach their highest COPs in spring and autumn, while still performing extremely well in winter – especially modern, high-performance systems like the Aira Heat Pump.
2. Lower flow temperatures
“Flow temperature” is the temperature of the water travelling through your radiators or underfloor heating. Traditional boilers often run at 60–80°C because they produce short bursts of high heat.
They provide steady, comfortable warmth over time, so they don’t need extreme temperatures to keep your home cosy. Most air-source heat pumps, including the Aira Heat Pump, typically run at 35–55°C, depending on your home’s design.
And here’s the important part: The lower the flow temperature, the higher the efficiency. That means:
- higher efficiency
- lower running costs
- more stable, comfortable warmth
Most homes can run at these lower flow temperatures. Occasionally, a room may need a larger radiator or a small upgrade – something our Clean Energy Experts check for during your free home energy assessment.
3. A correctly designed heating system
The design of the system matters just as much as the heat pump itself. When a system is designed around your home, rather than dropped in as a “one-size-fits-all” solution, the heat pump reaches its maximum efficiency.
That’s why every Aira Heat Pump system is individually designed using detailed heat-loss calculations and real data from your property. We look at:
- insulation levels
- radiator sizes
- room-by-room heat demand
- how you use your home
- where the outdoor unit will perform best
A perfectly designed system keeps flow temperatures low, distributes heat evenly, and ensures the heat pump runs in its optimal range. Which means more comfort, lower bills, and long-term reliability.
What affects heat pump efficiency?
Every heat pump in every home is a little different. But here’s what shapes its overall performance.
Temperature difference: Heat pumps work harder when the outdoor temperature is very low and the indoor temperature is very high. A well-designed system balances both seamlessly.
Flow temperature: Lower flow temperature = higher efficiency. That’s why radiator sizing and circuit design make such a big difference.
Installation quality: This is critical. A heat pump will only perform at its best when it’s sized correctly, installed carefully, and paired with the right radiators. Every Aira installer is trained at the Aira Academy and follows our industry-leading installation standards – no shortcuts, no “one size fits all” setups.
Heat loss: A heat pump doesn’t require a perfectly insulated home. But understanding your home’s heat loss allows us to size the system accurately so it performs at peak efficiency all year.
Outdoor unit placement: We position the outdoor unit where airflow is clear and efficient – and as discreet as possible.

Are heat pumps energy-efficient heaters?
Absolutely. In fact, heat pumps are the most energy-efficient heating systems available for UK homes today – often delivering three to four times more efficiency than a gas boiler.
Why heat pumps outperform boilers
Traditional boilers burn fuel to create heat. Even the very best gas boilers top out at around 90% efficiency, meaning 10% of the energy you pay for is lost immediately.
Heat pumps work differently. Instead of burning fuel, they transfer heat from the outdoor air into your home. That’s why a well-designed heat pump system can achieve 300–400% efficiency, even on cold winter days.
They’re efficient even in cold weather
Modern air source heat pumps — including the Aira Heat Pump — are engineered to perform efficiently in freezing conditions. They’re already the norm in countries like Sweden, Norway and Finland, where winter temperatures regularly drop well below those in the UK. So remember, with heat pumps, cold weather isn’t a barrier. It’s what they’re made for.
They produce a cosy indoor temperature every day
Because heat pumps deliver a steady, consistent temperature, your home stays warm without the sharp peaks and dips of a boiler system. No more blasting the heat and waiting for rooms to catch up. Just smooth, even warmth throughout the day.
The cost and environmental benefits of heat pumps
Lower running costs
A heat pump’s high efficiency translates directly into savings. By using 3-4X less energy than a gas boiler, a properly designed system can significantly cut heating costs. An Aira Heat Pump, for example, can save you up to £490 a year compared to a standard gas boiler. Use our heat pump calculator to see how much you could save.
£7,500 grant towards installation
For eligible homes, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme instantly removes £7,500 from the upfront cost. Making heat pumps far more affordable than most people expect. Plus, many major banks offer up to £2,000 cashback when you switch.
Cleaner, low-carbon heating
Switching from a boiler to a heat pump can reduce your home’s heating-related carbon emissions by around 75%, and by 100% when powered by green electricity. There are no fumes, no flue gases and no carbon monoxide risks. Just clean, efficient heat.
Protection from rising energy prices
Gas prices remain volatile, and the long-term trend points upward. Electricity, by contrast, is becoming increasingly stable – and increasingly renewable – as the UK transitions to a greener grid.
With a heat pump, you’re not only cutting emissions; you’re future-proofing your home against rising heating costs.
Make your home and heat pump even more efficient with solar
When your solar panels generate electricity, your heat pump can use it instantly – meaning part of your heating is effectively free. You’re not just heating your home efficiently; you’re heating it with clean energy you produced yourself.
How solar boosts heat pump efficiency
A heat pump powered by solar is the perfect combination. When your panels generate electricity, your heat pump uses it directly – meaning you heat your home with free, renewable energy.
Store your solar. Use it when you need it most with a home battery.
Pair the Aira Heat Pump with Aira Power (solar panels, the Aira Power Store and the Aira Power Hub) and you get the Aira Home Energy System — a complete, intelligent eco-system designed to maximise your self-sufficiency and slash your energy bills by up to 90%.
