The challenge
Gareth and his partner live in an Edwardian-era detached home in Stoke-on-Trent. When they realised their gas boiler was approaching the end of its life, they began looking for an alternative heating solution that better aligned with their environmental views.
Initially, Gareth hesitated to consider a heat pump, believing it was unsuitable for their 90-year-old home. Like so many people, Gareth wrongly believed his house needed to be more modern and better insulated.
As a graphic designer who had spent years curating the look and feel of his home, Gareth not only wanted a heat pump that fit seamlessly with his home’s aesthetic but also new radiators that would complement his interior design.
Our solution
Our Clean Energy Expert, Emma, visited Gareth’s home for a free home energy assessment, guiding him through the Aira system and detailing the steps for his switch before providing a price-locked quote.
We managed all paperwork for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme on Gareth’s behalf and deducted £7,500 off his bill. We also offered him the choice of spreading the costs of his heat pump across monthly payments with our flexible finance options.
Our Clean Energy Designers crafted a custom system, which included an Aira Heat Pump (6kW), Indoor Unit (100L), and buffer tank (40L) all carefully positioned to complement his home’s design. We also helped select new radiators that matched the aesthetics of his interior.
Following the successful install of his heat pump, Gareth stands to save 25% on his heating bills. And if he experiences any issues with his system, he’s covered by our 15 Year Comfort Guarantee.
Gareth's verdict
I chose Aira for their environmentally friendly ethos and all-inclusive, hassle-free approach.
As a graphic designer, the aesthetics of the heat pump were also very important to me, and the Aira Heat Pump is the best one I’ve seen. Its modern, simple and timeless design was a perfect fit for our home.
The entire process was really streamlined, from the free home energy assessment to installation. During the install, the team was very respectful of our home, fitting the entire system without disruption – including the new radiators we had selected. Before they left, they explained how the system and app worked, and removed my old boiler to be recycled.
Now that we have our Aira Heat Pump, we never run out of hot water, and noise hasn’t been an issue at all. We don’t even hear it when we’re out in the garden.
I’m really happy with my Aira experience and I’d gladly recommend them to anyone upgrading their boiler.

“I would recommend Aira to anyone considering switching to a heat pump and wants to save money on their heating bills.”
Why install a heat pump?
Heat pumps are 4X more efficient than traditional gas oir oil boilers, which means they not only cut your home’s CO₂ emissions but reduce your heating costs by 33% when combined with an Aira Clean Energy tariff.
With the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you can also apply for a £7,500 grant from the UK Government. Making a heat pump even more affordable.
How noisy is the Aira Heat Pump?
When in operation, the outdoor unit of your Aira Heat Pump system emits a gentle running sound, typically between 56 and 57 decibels, depending on the size of your unit. These noise levels are designed not to be disruptive and naturally fade into the background.
During colder weather, the unit may need to work harder to heat your home and hot water, which can lead to increased noise levels at times.
How much space do I need for the outdoor unit?
The space required for the outdoor unit of a heat pump can vary depending on factors such as the model and size of the heat pump, as well as local regulations and installation requirements.
Heat pump outdoor units typically require a designated area with sufficient clearance for airflow and maintenance access. During our free home energy assessment, an Aira Clean Energy Expert will advise where your outdoor unit should be placed.

Do I need solid wall insulation if I have solid brick walls?
While solid wall insulation can improve the energy efficiency of a property, you do not need it to be able to meet the necessary EPC criteria to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme or install a heat pump.
Contact an Aira Clean Energy Consultant to find out if you’re eligible for the Boiler Upgrade scheme.
Will I be without hot water and heating during installation?
On the first day of installation, our experienced technicians will inform you about any temporary service interruptions (gas, water, electricity) and provide a timeline for when they will be restored.
