Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (or ‘BUS’ for short) gives eligible homes a £7,500 grant to help replace their old gas or oil boiler with a clean energy heat pump.
As part of our all-inclusive plan, we’ll apply for the grant on your behalf and deduct it from your invoice when you switch. But hurry, it won’t be around for long.
1. Live in England or Wales
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is only available for properties within England or Wales. Other schemes and funding are available for properties in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
If you live in Scotland, you may be eligible for the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan.
2. Own the property
To receive the BUS grant from the government, the application must be made on behalf of the property owner. During the process Ofgem will reach out to the property owner via email to confirm that the installer has applied for the grant on behalf of the property owner.
3. Completely replace a fossil fuel heating system
The heating system being replaced must be a fossil fuel system, or an electric system that did not include a heat pump. Air to air and hybrid heat pumps which include a fossil fuel heating system, and gas condensing boilers are not eligible under the BUS.
4. Have a valid energy performance certificate
A valid EPC is less than 10 years old. Don’t worry if you don't have one. If you need an EPC, we will sort it for you. Contact us to learn more.
Gareth knew his boiler was coming to the end of its life and began looking into some alternative energy sources for his home.
Initially, he didn’t think a heat pump would be a viable option. That all changed when he called Aira.

0% VAT to pay
What’s more, clean energy home improvements, like switching to a heat pump, installing solar panels and insulating your walls and roof, are exempt from VAT until 31st March 2027.
This translates to a further 20% reduction in the cost of becoming a more energy-efficient home.
What’s included in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The UK government is offering a £7,500 grant towards the cost and installation of air to water, ground source and water source heat pumps, and £5,000 to switch to a biomass boiler. It does not include air to air and hybrid heat pumps or gas condensing boilers. The grant applies to eligible households across England and Wales until 2028.
Is the BUS grant available in Scotland?
The Scottish government has a range of funding available for home efficiency improvements, with grants or interest-free loans that combined can get you up to £15,000. The funding available in Scotland must be obtained by you the customer, but we will help you every step of the way. For more information visit Home Energy Scotland.
Does receiving funding from other grants such as GBIS and ECO4 affect your BUS eligibility?
No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a separate grant and is not affected by having received funding through other government schemes. Similarly, if you do receive the BUS grant, you can still claim other grants like the GBIS & ECO4 to help you better insulate your property.
If you have previously received funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler, you will no longer be eligible to receive funding through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
How can I claim the £7,500 government grant and 0% VAT?
We'll ask some initial questions to check your home is suitable for a heat pump (70% of homes are). We will then help you claim this grant through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and guide you through the application. We will provide all the support and information you'd need from the initial application to the day of the installation.
