How we calculate our Aira Heat Pump savings
How we calculate our Aira Heat Pump savings
We compare the running costs of a gas boiler with an Aira Heat Pump optimised by Aira Intelligence on a Cosy Octopus tariff to understand how much customers could save on their energy bills.
First, we calculate the savings from switching to an Aira Heat Pump
For this, we don’t guess, or assume. Because Aira Intelligence is built into every Aira Heat Pump, we can see exactly how much electricity each installed system is using. And when. We look at homes with at least a year’s worth of performance data to ensure a fair annual comparison and avoid seasonal bias. Using a typical heat pump efficiency level of COP 4, we calculate how much heat that electricity would deliver. We then work out how much gas a typical boiler would need to produce the same amount of heat, assuming an efficiency of 85% (based on a UK government study). Next, we calculate running costs using the Ofgem price cap for Q2 2026: 26.11 pence per kWh for electricity and 7.33 pence per kWh for gas. We also include the savings customers make by no longer paying the gas standing charge (£106 per year). This allows us to compare what it costs an Aira Heat Pump and a gas boiler to deliver the same amount of heat to the same home. The difference between the two is the saving. We then take an average across all homes to provide a representative view of real-world savings.
Next, we calculate the savings from tariff optimisation
When customers connect their tariff in the Aira app, Aira Intelligence can optimise how their heat pump runs around electricity prices. For example, on a smart tariff, Aira Intelligence can shift heating into cheaper periods when electricity costs less. We use Cosy Octopus in our savings scenario because it provides the largest set of real-world optimisation data across our customer base. To measure the impact, we compare days when tariff optimisation is active with randomly selected calibration days where optimisation is temporarily switched off. We then analyse the difference in running costs while accounting for factors such as weather and outdoor temperature, which naturally affect heating demand. This allows us to isolate the impact of tariff optimisation and measure how much money customers are actually saving. We add these savings to the base savings from switching from a gas boiler to an Aira Heat Pump.
Then, we include the savings customers could save on Cosy Octopus on their appliances
Because households can save money by shifting some everyday electricity use into Cosy Octopus’ cheaper periods, we also include estimated appliance savings in our overall savings scenario. To calculate this, we start with the average electricity consumption of an Aira Heat Pump home. Based on our fleet data, the average Aira Heat Pump home uses around 3,900 kWh of electricity per year. Heating typically accounts for around 53% of household electricity use. This means the remaining 47% – around 3,458 kWh per year – is used by appliances and other household electricity demand. We then estimate the savings customers could make by taking advantage of Cosy Octopus’ lower-cost electricity periods. For example, customers may choose to run appliances such as washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers when electricity is cheaper. For our savings scenario, we assume this behaviour reduces appliance electricity costs by 8%. We then add this estimated saving to the measured savings from running an Aira Heat Pump on Cosy Octopus compared with a gas boiler to show the total potential energy bill savings available to customers.
Why we don’t use the highest saving figure
Some customers will save more than others. Every home is different, and savings depend on factors such as property size, energy use, heating demand and how actively customers make use of lower-cost tariff periods. For this reason, we don’t use the highest saving figure from our data when communicating potential savings. Instead, we use a saving figure that a significant proportion of customers could realistically achieve based on real-world performance data. We believe this provides a fairer and more representative view of the savings available. Many customers may save more than the figure we advertise. The savings shown are designed to reflect a realistic outcome rather than the maximum possible result. Savings will vary between homes and can be higher depending on factors such as indoor temperature preferences, tariff choice and Aira Intelligence settings chosen in the app.
What about our 100% carbon emission savings claim?
Our claim that the Aira Heat Pump can reduce your home’s heating CO₂ emissions by 100% is based on an average yearly electricity consumption with an Aira Heat Pump system combined with the Cosy Octopus smart tariff compared to the gas consumption of a traditional boiler. Octopus Energy smart tariffs are 100% green. This means that the electricity you pay for originates from green sources such as wind, solar and hydropower. Octopus achieves this by working out how much power their customers are taking out of the grid annually and ensure an equal amount of green electricity is added into the system in its place over the year. Not only does this make the electricity you pay for carbon free, it helps make the energy system greener for everyone too.
