Is Carbon Rewards a form of greenwashing?

Short answer: No. Carbon Rewards isn’t about greenwashing – and neither Aira nor Snugg are at risk of doing so. The potential for greenwashing comes from the businesses who buy carbon credits, if they use them irresponsibly. That’s why Snugg ensures the credits are high-quality, and screens buyers carefully to stop this from happening.

Carbon Rewards is our way of recognising and rewarding UK homeowners for making their homes more sustainable. It gives you something back for the effort it takes to make your home more energy efficient, and it helps encourage more people to make the switch to a heat pump. We believe that this kind of large-scale change is essential if the UK is going to reduce its residential heating carbon emissions and hit Net Zero targets.

To answer this in more detail, let’s be clear on what greenwashing actually means. There’s no single legal definition, but the UK and EU generally describe it as:

"The practice of giving a false impression of the environmental impact or benefits of a product, which can mislead consumers.”

Examples include:
- A business buying credits instead of cutting its own emissions
- Overstating the impact of purchasing credits (e.g. claiming “carbon neutrality” without evidence)
- Using poor-quality credits that aren’t properly measured or could be reversed later

So, why is Carbon Rewards not greenwashing?

1) It's built on real, measurable CO₂ savings
When you switch to an Aira Heat Pump, your smart meter tracks exactly how much energy and carbon you’re saving. These reductions are independently verified and turned into high-quality UK carbon credits. They aren’t based on estimates – they’re based on your actual data.

2) The credits are best-in-class
Snugg’s approach uses smart meter data at a level of detail no other carbon credit scheme matches. That makes these credits some of the most robust, expensive and trustworthy on the market. And much harder for bad-faith buyers to misuse.

3) Businesses are carefully vetted
Not every business can buy. Snugg screens buyers to make sure they have credible Net Zero plans and aren’t using credits as a substitute for reducing their own emissions. If a company doesn’t meet those standards, they don’t get to buy the credits.

And because Snugg’s credits are high-quality, they cost more than the cheap, low-impact ones out there. If a business wasn’t serious about its climate goals, it wouldn’t buy them.

If a company doesn't meet those standards, they don't get to buy. And Snugg can stop selling to companies who misuse them.

No. Carbon Rewards is outcomes-based. Every pound is directly tied to verified CO₂ savings from Aira-installed heat pumps in UK homes. The proceeds fund your all-inclusive plan and Aira Guarantee for up to 10 years.

If there's any surplus, it's donated to good charitable causes, ensuring your home's sustainable action continues to make a positive impact. Carbon Rewards is designed to help more people switch to cleaner, more affordable heating, while accelerating the adoption of heat pumps across the UK.

Can I sign up for Carbon Rewards without going through Aira?

Accepted Answer

You can. Snugg offers a similar carbon cashback scheme that you can sign up to directly. But here's the difference: if you sign up with Snugg independently, we'll charge for your all-inclusive plan after the first year as normal. You'd then get a single cashback payment from Snugg after about 18 months, and once a year after that, based on the amount of CO₂ savings and carbon credits you produce. And there's no guarantee that it'll add up to more than your £19.90 monthly plan cost.

When you join Carbon Rewards through Aira, your all-inclusive plan and Aira Guarantee are covered for you. Every month. For up to 10 years. So you don't need to wait for cashback or worry about the amount.

Where does the money from my first year of carbon credits go?

Accepted Answer

Because Snugg only pays out carbon credits about 18 months after sign-up, and then once a year after that, the proceeds from your first year of credits are used to cover your all-inclusive plan for the second year, when the £19.90 monthly payments begin.

Each following year works the same way: credits from year two pay for year three, and so on. In other words, the scheme uses your carbon credits to cover your all-inclusive plan in advance, so you can enjoy up to 10 years of your all-inclusive plan and Aira Guarantee without paying a penny.
